Ten Best Running Movies

1. Chariots of Fire (1981)  About two runners training for the 1924 Olympics.  Harald Abrahams and Eric Little are rivals on the track.  Eric Little  runs for God.  My favorite line is when Eric Little explains why he runs “I believe that God made me for a purpose.  But he also made me fast, and when I run,  I feel his presence”.

2.  Without Limits (1998) About the relationship between Steve Prefontaine and his coach.

3.  Prefontaine (1997) Steve was a runner who helped the sport gain popularity in the 1970’s.  He died in the prime of his career in a car accident at the age of 24.  The film looks at his life through the eyes of his girlfriend and assistant coach.

4.  Rocky (1976)  It is really a boxing movie but everyone remembers Sly Stallone running through the streets of Philadelphia until he finally climbs the steps of the Art Museum and throws his arms in the air.  Visitors to Philadelphia often want to run up the steps like Rocky did.

5.  Forest Gump (1994)

6.  Run Fat Boy Run (2007)  Five years after leaving his pregnant fiancée at the altar he tries to win her back by beating her boyfriend in a marathon.  Getting in shape is half the battle, race day and a cheating competitor is the other battle.

7.  Running Brave (1983 )  The story about Billy Millls obstacles and struggles on his way to winning the 10,000 meters in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.  Billy Mills obstacles included racism being the first American Indian runner competing.

8.  Endurance (1999)  Ethiopian Haile Gabresellasie won the 10,000 meters in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Games.  The story about how he was raised in the oppressive conditions in one of the world’s poorest countries.

9.  Run for the Dream: The Gail Devers Story (1996) Gail Devers was an Olympic contender until she was diagnosed with a crippling disease.  Doctors said she would never walk again.  But 18 months later she won Olympic Gold in the Barcelona Games and again in the Atlanta Olympics.  Those 18 months had lots of ups and downs as one can imagine.

10. Cool  Running’s (1993)  The Olympic track and field trails in Jamaica 100 meter finals three athletes are left on the track with their dreams of competing in the Olympics gone as all the other competitors finish.  They try to convert three runners and a go cart driver into a bobsled team- to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.  But Jamaica had no snow so the athletes come up with new ways to train.
